Unwind the Finnish Way:

Experience Authentic Saunas

The Keweenaw is steeped in Finnish heritage, and there’s no better way to connect with this legacy than by stepping into a traditional sauna (pronounced SOW-NA). Feel the stress melt away as you embrace the warmth of the wood-fired or electric sauna, a ritual that has been a cornerstone of Finnish life for generations. Whether you’re visiting a rustic lakeside cabin or a modern spa facility, the sauna experience here is as genuine as it gets.

What is a Sauna?

A sauna is simply a small room or building designed to create a hot, steamy environment where you can relax and sweat out toxins. Traditionally heated by a wood-fired stove, modern saunas often use electric heaters to achieve the same effect. The heat, typically between 150-195°F (65-90°C), promotes circulation, relieves muscle tension, and provides a deeply relaxing experience. In Finnish culture, this practice is not just about physical benefits - it’s a time-honored ritual for mental and spiritual cleansing as well.

How to Sauna Like a Local

Saunas are reported to provide many health benefits, both to your mental and physical wellness. Keeping a temperature between 150-195°F (65-90°C) will provide a comfortable sweat and soothe your body. If you begin to feel uncomfortable or light-headed at any time, step out immediately. Here is a quick guide to help you get the most out of your sauna experience:

  1. Warm Up Slowly: Begin by entering the sauna and sitting on the lower benches where the heat is milder. This allows your body to adjust to the warmth gradually.

  2. Stay Hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of water before and after your sauna session. You’ll be sweating a lot, so it’s important to stay hydrated.

  3. Use a Löyly (Steam): If you’re in a Finnish sauna, don’t forget the löyly! Pour a small ladle of water over the hot stones to create steam. This raises the humidity and intensifies the heat, which many find to be the most soothing part of the experience.

  4. Cool Down: After spending about 10-15 minutes in the sauna, step outside or into a cooler room to let your body temperature come down. Some enjoy a cold plunge in a lake or shower for an invigorating contrast.

  5. Repeat: Traditional sauna sessions often involve multiple rounds. After cooling, re-enter the sauna and repeat the process. Three rounds are typical, but listen to your body and adjust as needed.
