What is the Destination Development Fund?

The Destination Development Fund is a matching grant program designed to support innovative projects that improve public spaces, trails, cultural sites, and other community assets.

The goal is simple:

  • Make it easier for visitors to enjoy the Keweenaw
  • Preserve and highlight the area’s natural beauty and rich history
  • Strengthen communities by investing in shared spaces and experiences

Examples of past projects:

  • Trailhead construction and trail improvements
  • Wayfinding and interpretive signage
  • Cultural and heritage enhancements
  • Public amenities like seating, picnic areas, or scenic overlooks

This fund is supported by Visit Keweenaw’s annual budget, including contributions from our partner lodging properties, and is designed to amplify local investment in the visitor experience.

Application Process:

  • Complete the online application
  • Projects are encouraged to be completed by September 30th of the award year (not required)

How Projects Are Selected

Applications are reviewed by Visit Keweenaw staff and a subcommittee of the Board of Directors. Projects are evaluated based on:

  • Visitor Experience: Will the project enhance the experience of visitors in the Keweenaw?
  • Demonstrated Need: Does it fill a gap or address a need not currently met?
  • Community Impact: Will the broader community benefit?
  • Sustainability: Does it support a sustainable visitor economy?
  • Cost Share Ratio: How much local investment is included?
  • Capacity for Completion: Can the project be completed successfully by the deadline?
  • Longevity: Can the project be maintained after funding ends?

Projects that meet multiple criteria and show strong community engagement are prioritized.
