Peak Foliage Timing & Weekly Updates

Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula is one of the United State’s best places to experience fall foliage, with hardwood forests glowing in shades of red, orange, and gold. Peak color usually occurs from the last week of September through mid-October, moving gradually from the southern interior north toward Copper Harbor. Weekly reports keep you up to date so you can plan your visit at just the right time.

Fall Color Key

🍁⚪⚪⚪⚪ – Just Starting: Mostly green.
🍁🍁⚪⚪⚪ – Building: Pops of color but still mostly green.
🍁🍁🍁⚪⚪​ – Mid-Season Mix: A balance of greens and vibrant fall hues.
🍁🍁🍁🍁⚪​​ – Near Peak: Bold, widespread color with just a touch of green left.
🍁🍁🍁🍁🍁 – Peak: Fully lit canopy at its brightest, leaves about to drop.

South Keweenaw: Twin Lakes, Toivola, & South Range

Location: Twin Lakes, MI

Notes: Vibrant fall color. Some early turning trees are beginning to lose leaves, but a fair number of green trees will keep fall color rolling in this area for a while yet.

Notes: Fall color is at peak–rich jewel tones have caught up to the season.

Location: Calumet, MI

Notes: Fall color coming on strong in the Calumet area! Nearing peak near the Laurium Manor Inn.

Central Keweenaw

US-41 Corridor: Ahmeek, Central, Phoenix, Delaware

Update: October 6, 2026

Location: Mohawk (near Central), MI

Notes: The central portion of the Keweenaw is peaked and edging into leaf-drop at Open Skies Project located at Mount Horace Greeley (shown below). This area is the highest natural elevation in the Keweenaw Peninsula, so it does tend to peak quickly in the fall season. The fall colors surrounding will still have some catching up to do, but expect vibrant colors throughout!

Eastern Keweenaw 

Lac La Belle, Gay, Big (Grand) Traverse Bay

Update: October 7, 2026

Location: Lac la Belle, MI

Notes: Strong fall color, some signs of leaf drop. Some late turning trees yet will extend the fall colors but views look peak from road and Mount Bohemia summit views.

Northern Keweenaw 

Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor

Location: Copper Harbor, MI

Notes: Fall colors are rich and developed. High winds over the weekend is progressing the leaf drop at the higher elevations. Expect deep vintage tones to the remaining foliage!

Location: Eagle River, MI

Notes: Autumn has finally caught up to Eagle River! Slower turn than other location due to the proximity to Lake Superior.
