A Century on Skates

The Calumet Colosseum

Step inside the Calumet Colosseum, North America’s longest continuously used ice arena, where over a century of hockey, skating, and community echoes off every board. Opened in 1914, this historic rink has hosted Gibson Cup rivalries, local legends, and even an NHL preseason game with the Red Wings and Blues. In 2019, the town’s passion was recognized when Calumet won Kraft Hockeyville USA, a testament to a community that keeps its roots strong. Through generations, the Keweenaw has held fast to tradition while still welcoming adult skates, local leagues, roller derby, and community events. Here, hockey isn’t just a game—it’s Calumet’s living story.

Hockey at the Colosseum

The heart of the Colosseum beats strongest on the ice. From local legends to visiting teams, hockey has been at the center of Calumet life for over a century.

  • Gibson Cup Rivalries – Don’t miss the heated matchups against longtime local "rivals" Portage Lake Pioneers at home and at the historic Dee Stadium.
  • Adult Open Skate – Lace up for a casual skate Tuesday and Thursday evenings and enjoy the rink like a local.
  • Michigan Hockey Tournaments – The Colosseum hosts competitive tournaments, drawing hockey fans and players from across the state.

Keweenaw Roller Derby at the Colosseum

When the ice comes up for the season, the Colosseum’s energy doesn’t stop—it just rolls in a different direction. For over a decade, Keweenaw Roller Derby (KRD) has brought high‑speed flat track action to Calumet, turning this historic arena into a summer staple for fans of fast wheels and fierce competition.

At home bouts in the Calumet Colosseum, KRD skaters face off against teams from across the Upper Midwest, with doors swinging open and the first whistle blowing as fans fill the stands. Highlights of the season include invitational events where skaters from multiple leagues come together for a celebration of derby spirit, community, and competition.

This isn’t just a sport—it's a vibrant, inclusive community where all are welcome to cheer, skate, volunteer, and be part of the Copper Country’s lively summer scene.
