The Great Bear Chase

In the Keweenaw, the joys of cross-country skiing extend into early spring, thanks to the hundreds of inches of snow that fall each season! Since 1981, the Great Bear Chase has welcomed skiers from around the world to Calumet, Michigan, to experience the Copper Country's excellent late-season trail conditions in this friendly competition. While many other places in the Great Lakes region turn green by March, the UP Health Great Bear Chase Marathon offers skiers a variety of races and distances to enjoy!

A Swedetown Trails Tradition

The UP Health System Great Bear Chase is held annually during late winter/early spring at Swedetown Ski Trails in Calumet, Michigan. These iconic Copper Country trails are ideal for a springtime cross country ski race, as this area typically receives 230+ inches of snow annually. While the race has evolved drastically throughout its long tenure, The Great Bear chase maintains a quality trail throughout the Swedetown system, including the signature Mama Bear, Papa Bear, and Baby Bear trails. 

The Great Bear Chase exemplifies the large and welcoming ski culture within the Keweenaw. A race for skiers, by skiers - racers will enjoy the small town feel and Copper Country hospitality. Racers and viewers are welcomed to enjoy a variety of race events of varying styles and distances:

• Skiathlon (20 & 50km)
• Classic (10, 25, 50km)
• Freestyle (10, 25, 50km)
• Sit Ski Adaptive (3 & 6km)
• Junior Bear Chase (1 & 2km Classic, 2 & 4km Freestyle)
