Community Event & Festival Sponsorships

Events and festivals are an important part of what makes the Keweenaw a great place to visit and live. From longtime community traditions to new experiences that bring visitors here for the first time, these events showcase the people, places, culture, and character that make our region unique. We’re grateful to the organizations, businesses, volunteers, and community leaders who bring them to life.

The information below provides an overview of how Visit Keweenaw approaches sponsorship and community investment, and the types of opportunities that align most closely with our mission as the region’s destination marketing organization.

How Visit Keweenaw Evaluates Sponsorship & Community Investment Requests

Visit Keweenaw is committed to supporting events, organizations, and initiatives that strengthen the region's visitor economy, celebrate the Keweenaw's unique culture, and enhance the quality of life for those who call the Keweenaw home.

As the official destination marketing organization (DMO) for the Keweenaw, our primary mission is to support the local visitor economy, encourage longer visitor stays, and promote destination stewardship that benefits local businesses, residents, and communities throughout the region.

Because available sponsorship funding is limited, requests are evaluated competitively based on how well they advance these goals. While we recognize the important role that many community events play in improving quality of life, Visit Keweenaw's financial investments are focused first and foremost on projects that create meaningful tourism benefits.

What We Prioritize

Preference is generally given to proposals that demonstrate one or more of the following:

  • Attract visitors from outside the Keweenaw.
  • Generate overnight stays and increase lodging demand.
  • Encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the region.
  • Increase visitor spending at local restaurants, retailers, attractions, and recreation providers.
  • Support travel during shoulder seasons or winter months.
  • Showcase the unique character, culture, history, and outdoor recreation opportunities of the Keweenaw.
  • Strengthen Visit Keweenaw's destination brand and reputation.
  • Foster collaboration among communities, tourism partners, and local businesses.
  • Demonstrate long-term potential to become a signature tourism event or recurring visitor attraction.

How We Evaluate Requests

Each application is reviewed using a consistent evaluation process that considers:

  • Strategic alignment with Visit Keweenaw's mission and priorities.
  • Expected visitor and economic impact.
  • Marketing value provided in exchange for sponsorship.
  • Organizational capacity and readiness to successfully deliver the event.
  • Financial stewardship and the anticipated return on investment.
  • The level of staff time and organizational resources required to fulfill sponsorship commitments.

As a small organization with only three full-time employees, Visit Keweenaw must carefully balance available financial resources with the staff capacity needed to support sponsored initiatives.

More Than Financial Support

Not every worthwhile project is the right fit for direct financial sponsorship. In some cases, Visit Keweenaw may recommend alternative forms of partnership that better match a project's tourism impact and our available resources.

These partnerships may include:

  • Promotion through Visit Keweenaw's website, social media channels, newsletters, and other marketing platforms.
  • Cooperative marketing opportunities.
  • Distribution of visitor information and event listings.
  • Cross-promotion with tourism partners and member businesses.
  • Assistance identifying other funding or partnership opportunities.

What Makes a Strong Application

The most competitive proposals clearly demonstrate:

  • A compelling reason for visitors to travel to the Keweenaw.
  • A realistic estimate of expected attendance and overnight visitation.
  • The ability to create new visitor experiences, particularly during the Keweenaw's shoulder and winter tourism seasons.
  • Strong partnerships with local businesses and communities.
  • A thoughtful marketing and communications plan that reaches audiences beyond the local area, including a clear strategy for social media promotion.
  • A well-developed sponsorship package that clearly outlines the benefits provided to Visit Keweenaw and a plan for delivering those benefits.
  • A well-developed budget and sustainable funding strategy.
  • A clear plan for measuring results and sharing outcomes after the event.

Applicants are encouraged to think beyond the event itself by considering how visitors can be inspired to stay longer, explore more communities, support local businesses, and return to the Keweenaw in the future.
