What an incredible start to the summer season! June has flown by, leaving us with a tremendous wave of excitement, bustling downtowns, and strong lodging demand across Houghton and Keweenaw Counties. Thanks to your hard work and warm hospitality, our region continues to shine as a premier destination for travelers seeking authentic, vibrant, and refreshing summer experiences.
Here is a quick look at our major milestones from the past month and what lies ahead:
June Demand Hits New Highs: Our local tourism ecosystem experienced an exceptionally strong June, with room occupancy hitting remarkable highs. This surge was anchored by highly anticipated regional events like the traditional Juhannus Midsummer festival, which filled our communities with celebration and music. Additionally, Michigan Technological University's new student Orientation weekends brought thousands of incoming students and their families to the area, providing a massive, well-coordinated boost to our local hotels, motels, short-term rentals, and dining establishments.
Juhannus: The magic of the Keweenaw truly resonated globally this month. Thanks to the deep cultural roots and unique allure of our Juhannus celebrations, we had the privilege of welcoming visitors from across the globe. Putting our beautiful peninsula on an international stage not only highlights our rich heritage and stunning landscapes, but also reinforces the Keweenaw's growing reputation as a bucket-list destination for international travelers seeking authentic cultural experiences.
Summer Outlook: Across the industry, we are seeing a more deliberate consumer this summer; inflation and fuel costs have created an uneven travel market where budget-conscious households are becoming highly selective and intentional with their vacation spending. Fortunately, the Keweenaw is beautifully positioned to remain highly competitive in this climate. Current data indicates that travelers are actively prioritizing regional road trips, outdoor escapes, and active "playcations" centered around hands-on outdoor hobbies. Because our region offers world-class recreation—from legendary mountain biking trails to pristine Lake Superior waterfronts—at an incredible value compared to high-cost mainstream markets, we anticipate resilient, steady demand for the remainder of the summer.
Thank you for everything you do to welcome our visitors, support our local businesses, and showcase the very best of the Upper Peninsula. Let’s keep this incredible momentum going!
Warmly,
Brad | Visit Keweenaw

Bridgefest encapsulates the bubbly excitement throughout the Keweenaw - from visitors and locals alike!
The Keweenaw Welcome Center on Shelden Avenue has been bustling as the summer travel season gets underway. On several of the busiest days in June, Visit Keweenaw welcomed more than 50 visitors seeking recommendations, maps, lodging information and ideas for how to make the most of their stay.
Every conversation at the front desk is an opportunity to enhance a visitor's experience while directing travelers to local businesses, attractions, restaurants and communities throughout the peninsula. Our Visitor Information Specialists serve as the first point of contact for many guests, helping them discover places they may not have otherwise visited and encouraging longer stays and return trips.
As visitation continues to increase, we encourage members to keep their brochures stocked at the Welcome Center. Updated lodging and attraction brochures help our staff confidently recommend your business to visitors. If you need additional copies of the 2026 Keweenaw Visitor Guide for your lobby, front desk or guest rooms, stop by the office anytime.

Summer is off to a strong start with two signature events that helped bring visitors to the region during the first half of June.
Bridgefest filled Houghton and Hancock June 11-14 with fireworks, family activities, live entertainment and community traditions that encouraged overnight stays and extended weekends. The following weekend, the Juhannus Summer Solstice Celebration welcomed visitors from across the country and around the world to celebrate the Keweenaw's Finnish heritage. International ambassadors from Finland, Hungary and Estonia joined the festivities, while highlights included the floating kokko at Hancock Beach, the debut of the International Sauna Games and the Michigan Air Guitar Exhibition.
Visit Keweenaw is proud to invest in and support events like these because they create compelling reasons for people to visit, extend their stays and spend time exploring local businesses. Building a strong calendar of events throughout the year helps drive overnight visitation while showcasing the unique experiences that make the Keweenaw a destination unlike anywhere else.
