History Takes Center Stage

The Calumet Theatre, nestled in the heart of downtown Calumet, Michigan, stands as a testament to the area's rich cultural heritage. Opened on March 20, 1900, this Renaissance Revival-style theater was designed by local architect Charles K. Shand, featuring an exterior build made of the iconic salmon and cream striped Jacobsville Sandstone, sourced locally. As one of the first municipal theaters in the United States, the Calumet Theatre has hosted a myriad of performances over the years. Notable figures such as Sarah Bernhardt, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and John Philip Sousa have graced its stage. Its rich history and architectural beauty make it a living piece of Michigan's cultural tapestry.

Highlights of the theater’s historical beauty include:

  • Period-accurate chandelier installed in 2025 to reflect the theater’s original elegance.
  • Archival projectionist booth display, showcasing early film technology for movie and film enthusiasts.
  • Hand-painted murals representing the five arts, including one original mural hidden in the balcony.
  • Ornate proscenium and balcony architecture, perfect for photography and history buffs.
