How to Enjoy MTU Winter Carnival

Michigan Tech Winter Carnival centers around the Keweenaw's mid-winter, when the area has typically accumulated several hundred inches of snow. While statue preparations and student-centric events begin at the turn of each new year, the main Winter Carnival events span a 4 day extravaganza open to the public that encompasses statue building, outdoor fun, sports, and student-led entertainment! Whether you're in town only for the main Winter Carnival days or are enjoying a leisurely Keweenaw visit in the days leading up, there's always something on theme for you to enjoy. Find the yearly MTU Winter Carnival Schedule here! Don't miss:

  • All-Nighter: a final dash to complete and perfect statues, stroll around MTU campus and watch students hard at work, join dance parties, enjoy hot drinks and bites from student orgs, and play in the snow!
  • Blue Key Presents: Winter Carnival Stage Revue Show: student groups take the stage at the Rozsa Center for hilarious skits and hijinks all set to the year's theme - public is welcome!
  • Dog Sled Rides & Outdoor Games: There's a plethora of fun and goofy ways to enjoy time on campus or around Houghton from dog sled racing to horse carriage rides to Namebini-giizis Snow-Snake games!
  • St. Al's Ice Mass: student volunteers build an ice chapel at St. Al's that is softly lit with candles for evening mass. All are welcome to service or just to marvel at the feat of engineering.
  • Torchlight Parade and Firework Show: skiers descend Mont Ripley with vibrant flares, weaving a beautiful path of light down the nighttime slopes in this finale spectacle. Fireworks over Mont Ripley cap off Winter Carnival!
