Field Tested, Keweenaw Approved

Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear

The very particular vein of Keweenaw-inspired ingenuity and entrepreneurialism thrives in Chicken Tramper Ultralight Gear (CTUG), a Hancock, Michigan-based backpacking gear company. Helmed by Michigan Tech Alumni Austin Gongos and Nathan Ackerman, CTUG's products are rooted in the team's Copper Country adventures and a deep appreciation for its rugged outdoor experiences. Inspired by the diverse landscape and use-tested across seasons, the Keweenaw spirit of adventure lives in CTUG.

Keweenaw Seasonal Experiences

Find Your Own Inspiration

The Keweenaw provides distinct advantages to not just and outdoor gear company like CTUG, but also to outdoor recreational enthusiasts just like you. A truly unique peninsula, the Copper Country landscape provides rugged cliffside terrain for rock climbing and mountain biking, but also gladed woodlands and arcing beaches for hikes and relaxation. Lake Superior's might surrounds on each side, and a wide network of rivers, streams, and the beautiful Portage Canal provides access to kayaking and paddling. Mix in each of the distinct Michigan seasons, and hikable mountains become backcountry snowboarding paradises, wooded hikes become cross country skiing trails, and innumerable other seasonal outdoor recreational opportunities unfold.

CTUG's founders cite "Keweenaw Cruises" during their college days as inspiration that laid the bedrock for CTUG. If you're looking for a "Keweenaw Cruise" of your own to test your mettle and feel connected to the Copper Country, try these CTUG-inspired seasonal outings:

Hike through Fall Colors

As the fall colors turn throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula, there's a hiking trail suited for your outdoor adventure level perfect for immersing yourself in autumn bliss. For easy to moderate hikes, head to Nara Nature Trails or Maasto Hiihto. Looking for a little more challenge? Head to Mount Baldy or Mount Bohemia's Cliff View Trail

Dip the Oar in Keweenaw Waters

Summertime in the Keweenaw brings warm sun, lush nature, and refreshing swims. Canoeing and kayaking through the peaceful rivers vibrant with birds and wildlife, or taking a guided Lake Superior tour, is a wildly educational and memorable experience. The Sturgeon River and the Sturgeon River sloughs are some of our favorites for easy paddling. Head to Copper Harbor for a Lake Superior experience at Horseshoe Harbor or beyond with Keweenaw Adventure Company

Head to High Rock

Whatever the season, setting foot onto High Rock Bay is a singularly defining experience for outdoor enthusiasts. Beyond the origin of US41 and Copper Harbor, High Rock Bay is considered by many the Keweenaw's "furthest" point. Accessing High Rock Bay is no small feat, as the road remains ungraded and best suited for mountain bikes, high clearance vehicles, snowmobiles or ATV/ORVs. Once out here, the beauty of Lake Superior in the summer or winter is an awe-striking and indelible memory for adventurers.

Carve Winter's Bounty

The Keweenaw Peninsula experiences some of America's highest snowfalls, and we certainly know how to take advantage of it. Mount Bohemia's ungroomed and untamed Keweenaw mountains provide premiere backcountry skiing and snowboarding, recognized as a premiere Midwest winter resort gem. Near the Portage Canal, Mont Ripley provides endless fun on its slopes. This ski resort is the oldest in Michigan, and folks have been enjoying these downhill slopes and terrain park since the 1940s. Throughout the Keweenaw, beloved hiking trails become groomed cross country ski trails perfect for whisking through the winter woods. Check out Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids, the Michigan Tech Trails, and the Fort Wilkins Loop in Copper Harbor.

Seek a Waterfall

Snowmelt in the spring pumps up the Keweenaw's waterfalls, and makes spring a peak time for waterfall viewing. A spring hike or drive around the Copper Country will easily yield you incredible access to the waterfalls at peak capacity. For an impromptu Keweenaw Waterfall Tour, check out:
